I found this head modeling tutorial when I first started modeling in school and I still use some of the techniques today. If you have a good sense of how you want your edge loops to set-up at the start be it a character, prop, or any organic/non-organic model this tutorial will give you a different way of working. Instead of creating a base model in 3D space, in this process, you start flat creating your poly shape and then drawing in your edge loops. By yanking those point out to the correct depth and then moving the vertices into place you get a correct edge flow much quicker without the usual trial and error. In the very least I hope this technique gives you perspective on different processes out there.
